Also, a bespoke quote can be arranged on request.
While there is no specific legal requirement for homeowners or businesses to have a Solar Installation Condition Report (SICR) certificate, it is highly recommended to ensure the safety and efficiency of your solar system. Regulations such as the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) highlight the importance of taking precautions to minimise risks associated with electrical systems.
Having a SICR carried out by a qualified professional helps identify potential hazards, ensures compliance with safety standards, and provides peace of mind that your solar installation is operating safely and effectively.
Electrical installations are not immune to the process of ageing, deterioration and even general wear and tear. For this reason, an SICR should be conducted at regular intervals. British Standard BS 76719 (IET Wiring Regulations) recommends the following intervals for businesses, landlords and homeowners:
- Businesses – employers are recommended to have an SICR test undertaken once every five years.
- Buy-to-let or rented property – landlords should have an SICR test done every five years or when new tenants enter the property.
- Homeowners – an SICR is recommended every 10 years. If the property has a swimming pool, this should be tested once every year.
Solar Installation Condition Report
As a solar system owner, you want the peace of mind that your solar installation is safe, efficient, and operating as intended. Regular inspections are essential to ensure your system complies with safety standards, maximises energy output, and remains in optimal condition over time.
The Solar Installation Condition Report (SICR) is a detailed assessment carried out by a qualified professional. It involves the following:
- Inspection of the earthing system and supply characteristics – Ensuring the system is properly grounded for safety.
- Inspection of the inverter and associated components – Checking for faults, inefficiencies, or signs of wear in energy conversion equipment.
- Inspection of solar panels and mounting systems – Verifying structural integrity, alignment, and cleanliness to optimise performance.
- Inspection of wiring and connections – Ensuring all cables and connections are secure, undamaged, and compliant with regulations.
- Testing the polarity of the system – Confirming correct electrical flow and system functionality.
- Testing earth continuity of circuits – Ensuring all circuits are safely earthed to prevent electrical hazards.
- Testing the integrity of cabling insulation – Checking for damage or wear that could compromise safety or efficiency.
- Testing protective devices – Ensuring isolators, breakers, and other safety devices function correctly to protect your system and property.
around 3-4 hours
It is generally recommended that an SICR is carried out every ten years (five for privately rented properties) or when there is a change of occupancy in a dwelling. Typically an SICR will take around 3-4 hours to complete, depending on the size of a property and the number of circuits requiring testing.
A Solar Installation Condition Report (SICR) checks whether your solar system is operating safely and efficiently, identifying faults that may not be visible during a basic inspection. Common issues include damaged wiring, faulty inverters, or poor earthing, which could lead to inefficiencies, fire risks, or electrical hazards. SICR testing ensures that all components of your solar installation meet safety standards and are functioning as intended.
A visual inspection may also be carried out to provide a quick overview of your system’s condition. This includes checking for visible damage to solar panels, loose or corroded connections, and signs of overheating or wear on cables. The inspection will also assess the inverter, mounting system, and any protective devices, such as isolators, to ensure they are in good working order. Regular visual checks are recommended between full SICR tests to maintain system safety and performance.
After the SICR test is completed, the engineer will produce a detailed report. This report will highlight any damage, deterioration, or defects, as well as any components that do not meet current safety standards. If the test identifies any issues, the SICR will be classified as “unsatisfactory,” meaning remedial work is required to address the risks. The report will also categorise the issues using the following codes:
- C1 – ‘Danger is present,’ posing an immediate risk of injury. Urgent action is required.
- C2 – Potentially dangerous, requiring prompt remedial action.
- C3 – Improvement is recommended. This is the only code that can appear on a report while still passing the SICR test.
Once all necessary remedial work has been completed and your system passes the inspection, you will be issued a SICR Certificate of Safety. This certificate provides peace of mind that your solar installation is safe, compliant, and operating efficiently.
While there is no specific legislation requiring homeowners, businesses, or landlords to have a Solar Installation Condition Report (SICR) certificate, various laws outline the responsibilities of landlords and employers to ensure safety. For example, the Landlord and Tenant Act (1985) and the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) set out the duty of care landlords and employers have towards tenants and employees. Additionally, the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) require precautions to be taken to minimise the risk of injury caused by electricity used in work activities.

EXCELLENT Based on 503 reviews Posted on Matthew EskellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Matt was absolutely fantastic, gave us great advice on our electric shower and was very personable.Posted on MelTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I booked an EICR with MJP electrical. Communication was very clear and very quick. They provided me with a quote which was very reasonable, and followed up with me a few days later. The fact that I had a tenant in the property was no issue for them and they made an appointment with them and gave them a tracking link to see approximately when they would come for the appointment. All passed and no extra charges which was great news. Received the certificate the same day. All in all, good pricing, great communication, and quick to reply. Would recommend!Posted on Stephen LongTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mark and his apprentice Stan recently carried out some electrical work for me and I was really impressed from start to finish. The work was completed to a very high standard, everything was left clean and tidy, and they arrived very punctually. They were polite, explained things clearly and easy to talk to. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mark and Stan and will definitely use them again in the future!Posted on M LTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great service, very friendly and reliable. Got the job done professionally with no hassle whatsoever. (And on a Saturday)Posted on DanielTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We recently had a full house rewire completed by MJP Electrical and I honestly couldn’t be more impressed with the whole experience. From start to finish, the service was professional, organised and reassuring. A full rewire can feel disruptive, but the team made the process smooth and manageable. They were punctual, clear in their communication and always happy to answer any questions along the way. The workmanship was immaculate. Everything has been finished to a very high standard, with real attention to detail. What stood out just as much was how tidy they kept the property throughout the job. At the end of each day, things were left clean and safe, which makes a huge difference when you’re living in the house during major works. They were also consistently polite and respectful – not only to us, but to our neighbours as well. That level of courtesy doesn’t go unnoticed and speaks volumes about their professionalism. On top of that, the pricing was very reasonable for the scale and quality of work delivered. If you’re looking for a reliable, skilled and considerate electrical team for a full rewire or any major project, I would highly recommend MJP Electrical. A genuinely great service from start to finish.Posted on CL MontTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Brilliant and fast service. Matthew completed the job with clear expertise and we got everything sorted the same week as we made the booking. Highly recommend!Posted on Damian WardingleyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. They came out for an emergency call out on Xmas Eve so we engaged them for some more major work. Everything done in the promised timescale, reasonably priced, engineer friendly, efficient, and reassuring. Would recommend!Posted on EMMA DAVIESTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. MJP are a great company. They are extremely professional and transparent. I have used them twice now and they have been very easy to communicate with, very clear in terms of the process and what is included in the price. They have never quoted for work that doesn't need to be done. We had an electrical safety check and passed without further work which is refreshing because from experience other companies may add something on unnecessary. They were patient with me while we compared other quotes and with me being an overseas landlord it was a very easy and smooth process. They worked with my tenants and dealt with me electronically and we're very understanding of time zone challenges. They also updated me immediately after the visit. Will definitely use again next time. Thank you team!
