Why Install a Home EV Charger in Whiteway?

As electric vehicles become an increasingly popular choice for drivers in Whiteway. The convenience of home EV charging has become a top priority. At MJP Electrical, we specialise in the reliable and safe installation of domestic EV charging stations, ensuring your electric vehicle is always ready for your next journey. Say goodbye to public charging queues and hello to effortless overnight charging right from your driveway.

If your fuse box is starting to look a bit dated or feels slightly strained when you’re running multiple appliances, adding a new charging point to your grid shouldn’t be a headache. You’ve probably heard that older electrical setups in areas like Whiteway can struggle with the sudden demand of high-powered devices. Since electric vehicles pull a significant amount of energy, jumping straight into a Home EV Charger Installation without checking your existing consumer unit is a bit like trying to run a marathon on a sore ankle.

Taking that into account, our approach involves looking at your entire electrical ecosystem first. It’s not just about bolting a unit to a wall; it’s about ensuring your property can handle the load safely and efficiently for years to come. As a certified NICEIC Electrician, we focus on these foundational upgrades, whether that means a modernised consumer unit or a bespoke wiring run, so your new car charges reliably every single night without tripping the mains.

This kind of setting calls for practical, grounded solutions rather than quick fixes that fail when the weather turns or the usage peaks. We provide clear pricing upfront and tidy workmanship that respects your space, ensuring the installation integrates smoothly into your daily life. One practical way to deal with this is to ensure all work is fully certified, giving you the peace of mind that your home’s electrical safety keeps pace with your modern transport needs.

Installation varies but standard installation is around £350

The cost to charge an electric car in the UK varies between home, work and public charging. For a typical electric car with a 60kWh battery and ~200 mile range: Charging at home: Costs about £8.40 for a full charge.

To have a home charge point installed for your car you need to have:
1. Dedicated off-street parking,
2. Wi-Fi connection at your property or a SIM router with a 3G or 4G SIM (for Pod Point home chargers),
3. Permission from your landlord (if you’re renting),
4. Home in mainland Great Britain.

Time to charge an electric car can take as little as 30 minutes or up to 12 hours. The time it takes to charge depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point. A typical electric car (Nissan LEAF 30kWh) takes 4 hours to charge from empty with a 7kW home charging point

The OLEV Grant, also known as Electric Vehicle Home charge Scheme (EVHS), provides £350 off the cost of purchasing & installing a home charging point and can be claimed on the majority of plug-in vehicles on today’s market. You can claim one charging per eligible vehicle and up to two charging points per household.

To qualify for OLEV’s EVHS grant, you need to have leased an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle for at least six months, or have purchased one on or after 1st October 2016 onwards. You must have off-street parking. You must install an OLEV-approved chargepoint.

  • The homeowner must comply with all current OLEV Domestic Scheme Terms and Conditions (see OLEV Website)

The typical cost for a home charge point and installation is approximately £1000. As part of its Electric Vehicle Homecharge scheme, OLEV currently offers applicants £350 towards this cost.

All electric cars usually come with a standard charging cable (slow charger) which can plug into the car and a normal wall socket, via a domestic socket – the same kind you’d use to power a microwave or phone charger.

Office for Low Emission Vehicles

The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) is a team working across government to support the early market for ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEV).

For most of us, a few times a year. That’s when you’d want a rapid charge of under 45 minutes or so. The rest of the time, slow charging is just fine. It turns out most electric-car drivers don’t even bother to plug in every night, or necessarily to fully charge.

To qualify for the plug-in car grant, you must be purchasing a brand new qualifying electric vehicle.

  • Only certain plug-in vehicles are eligible for the grant.
  • The vehicle must have an electric range of at least 70 miles.
  • If plug-in hybrid, the vehicle must also have combined CO2 emissions of 50g/km or less.
  • This means all major full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) qualify, but few plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are eligible.
  1. To provide evidence of ownership of, or access to, a plug-in vehicle in order to be able to qualify for the governments subsidised funding scheme
  2. Off-Street parking
  3. Suitability of the proposed site for the installation services (the surveyor will advise on this)
  4. Permission from the homeowner or landlord if you don’t own the property
  5. If the Charging Point is to be located in a garage, the garage must be physically attached to the main building unless it has its own power supply with sufficient capacity to support your 16 amp or 32 amp rated charger
  6. You have not claimed for the OLEV grant prior to your application.
